The 6th Louisiana Tigers, Created on May 23rd 1861 was originally mostly an Louisiana born and Irish manned regiment, which not long after started recruiting all men around New Orleans of European descent. Italian, Irish, French, Spanish and British Companies were created within the 6th Louisiana regiment and know as the 6th Louisiana "European Brigade". The "Italian Guards" is the Company A that you fight for, adorned with Red "Garibaldi" Coats, very similar to the coats the British Army used at the time. The 6th was sent to Lynchburg to train and not long after stationed at Manassas, Virginia. The 6th was assigned to the second brigade under General Richard Ewell. There they took part in the Battle of First Manassas. In October 1861, Captain Tenney of Company D "Italian Guards" was killed trying to break up a fight amongst two drunken soilders, and was replaced by my great, great uncle Giusieppe Paioletti as Captain of Company D. The 6th was the last Regiment to leave Mannasas and served as rear guard as they moved south to join under Taylors Louisiana brigade of Ewells division, of Stonewall Jacksons Army of the Valley of Shenandoah. The 6th Fought in the Battle of Front Royal, Middletown, Winchester & Cross keys and Port Republic, Gaines Mill & Second Manassas. During Second Manassas the "Italian Guards" Colonel Forno (Highest ranking Italian in the Confederacy at the time) was wounded and replaced by Colonel Strong. The Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) then ensued, with the 6th being commanded by General Ewell under Stonewall Jackson, the 6th lost 52 men in the infamous battle in and around the cornfield and Colonel Strong was killed in the action. They participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg, At Chancellorsville they lost 81 soilders. At the Battle of Gettysburg the Italian Guards of the 6th stormed and captured East Cemetery Hill on the second day of battle and captured several pieces of union artillery, but had to withdraw when reeinforcents never materialized. They lost 62 men including 2 officers at Gettysburgs in 3 days of fighting. At the Battle of Raphannock Station the Hays Louisiana Brigade lost 699 out of 1200 men, 89 of them being from 6th Louisiana. 6th Louisiana played roles in the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Early's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Battle of Monocacy, 2nd battle of Kernstown,3rd battle of Winchester, Fishers Hill, and battle of Battle of Cedar Creek. By this point things had become absolutely dire for the 6th LA having only 400 men left of 2000. 3 years of war had savaged them yet they continued to fight. They Knuckled down and fought in the Battle of Hatchers Run, Fort Stedman, The final assault of Petersburg, Saylor Creek, and finally with only 4 officers and 48 men left of 2000 only 2 years previous, surrenderd with Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House.
